Why convert JPG to PNG?
The most common reasons are practical: an app or form only accepts PNG, or you want to edit an image and save it repeatedly without the extra blurring that comes from re-saving a JPG each time. PNG is lossless, so once the image is a PNG it won’t degrade further, no matter how many times you save it.
What it won’t do
Converting won’t improve quality. Any detail JPG compression already removed is gone, and the PNG will show the same image, usually at a larger file size. It also won’t make the background transparent; a JPG has no transparency to keep, so the background stays solid.
If your goal is a smaller file for the web, convert to WebP with JPG to WebP instead. If the image is too large, Compress Image or Resize Image will help more.
Frequently asked questions
Will converting to PNG improve quality?
No. PNG stores the image without further loss, but it can’t restore detail that JPG compression already removed. The file usually gets bigger.
