How words and sentences are counted
Words are counted using your browser’s language-aware word segmentation, the same technology used for selecting words with a double-click. It handles contractions, hyphenated words and numbers sensibly, and works for languages written without spaces, such as Chinese and Japanese. Characters are counted as visible characters, so an emoji or an accented letter counts as one.
Sentences are counted by their ending punctuation, and paragraphs by blank lines between blocks of text.
Typical length targets
| Text | Common limit or target |
|---|---|
| Meta description | About 150–160 characters |
| Page title for search | About 50–60 characters |
| X (Twitter) post | 280 characters |
| LinkedIn post | 3,000 characters |
| College application essay | Often 650 words |
| Short blog post | 600–1,000 words |
The “most used words” list helps you spot repetition. If one word appears far more than others, a synonym or a restructured sentence often reads better. To change the capitalization of a title, use the Case Converter.
